Old Bathroom Tile Ideas

Small bathrooms can often seem limited and lacklustre, but you can still bring much impact to a bijou bathroom and create a luxe, spa-like haven – and you don't always have to spend a fortune.

'Decorating a small bathroom on a budget can seem like a huge task, but it's all about the finishing details,' says Emmie Brookman, interiors expert and Creative Director at Silver Mushroom. Whether it's quick DIY updates or eye-catching décor, we've rounded up some great budget small bathroom ideas to help you transform your compact bathroom for less.

Budget small bathroom idea 1: Create a spa-like sanctuary

For very little you can add instant ambience by creating a spa-like retreat. Simply fill your small bathroom with heavenly scents and relaxing accessories. Candles or aroma diffusers are a great way to create a cosy feel to unwind in, and they make stylish features in any bathroom.

'Essential oils and scented soaps will help you to relax and unwind, and give your space a really indulgent edge,' says Emmie. 'Choose a stylish diffuser to instantly add atmosphere to the room and finish off with a scented candle in order to truly unwind.'

Budget small bathroom idea 2: Decanter unsightly toiletries

If you don't want unsightly or mismatched plastic toiletries on display, decanter everything. Purchase glass dispenser bottles or jars for your shampoos, shower gels and lotions, and display items on ceramic trays. This will give your toiletries a luxe makeover, costing next to nothing, and it's more eco-friendly too! It also cuts down on unnecessary packaging that clutters up your small bathroom, helping you to reclaim space.

Small bathrooms can look even more tiny with cluttered worktops, so streamlining and making it more organised is essential. A useful budget small bathroom idea is to invest in stylish storage containers or wicker baskets to store your toiletries in. 'Efficient storage solutions are essential, there is no need to compromise on style,' says Steven Jaques, Pelipal Development Manager at InHouse Inspired Room Design. 'Combine innovative space-saving furnishings with personal stylistic touches to neatly store all your belongings. There is a place for everything in ergonomic storage trays, divided drawers, and shelving units that are just the right height for all your toiletries.'

Budget small bathroom idea 4: Treat your windows

It's something we tend to take for granted, but window treatments can offer much character to your bathroom, as well as privacy. From roller blinds to venetian, there is a window treatment style to suit all sizes. A budget-friendly option is window films, which are fuss-free adhesives that can be stuck onto windows. Simply clean the window, remove the backing and carefully stick onto glass. Make sure there are no bubbles or water and trim the end. There isn't any need for installation or glue either, so you can easily transform your window in seconds. While you're styling windows, why not decorate your sills with lush bathroom plants or succulents.

Budget small bathroom idea 5: Upgrade your towels and linens

If you've always wanted those luxury hotel vibes, upgrade your worn and threadbare towels to plush and fluffy towels. Ideally aim for 100 per cent Egyptian cotton which has longer, fine fibres that gives it that super soft and more absorbent feel. 'Whether you go for crisp white soft sumptuous towels and bath mats, or inject some colour, swapping out threadbare towels is a cost-effective solution,' advises James Montgomery-Castle, Senior Assistant Buyer at Soak & Sleep.

Budget small bathroom idea 6: Upcycling old furniture

Painting is always a creative and cost-effective way to update your old vanity or bathroom cabinet. If you want to give it the more distressed look, chalk paint is becoming a popular choice.' Chalk paint gives a velvety matte finish. People often think it's called chalk paint because chalk is a key ingredient, but it's actually because of how the paint looks,' states Annie Sloan, founder of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. 'This luxurious, textured finish plus the depth of pigment means that chalk paint does give a high-end feel.'

When using a tin of chalk paint, it's advisable to use wax or a lacquer top coat to prevent any chipping or fading over time. In any case, this will uplift bathroom furnishings in minutes.

Big mirrors are an excellent way to add depth and style to a small bathroom. They give the illusion of making a compact space bigger by reflecting more natural light. 'You want your bathroom to be bright and airy,' agrees Emmie Brookman, 'so placing a mirror opposite a window is an effective way of reflecting any natural light that comes in.'

What's more, there are plenty of shapes and designs to choose from that will add instant glamour to your bathroom.

Budget small bathroom idea 8: Spruce up with vinyl flooring

Updating your bathroom flooring can really add character and style to your bijou space. Vinyl flooring is an affordable and quick option, compared to the more expensive tiles. Designed to be hardwearing, vinyl is waterproof, scratch-resistant and easy to maintain.

'Vinyl flooring is a cost-effective way to give your home a quick update, and for bathrooms in particular people are often drawn to different patterns, contrasting colours and unusual layouts,' agrees Jessica Fox, Marketing & Design at Flooring Superstore. 'The Imperia Dorchester, priced £8.99 per square metre, is a simple way to create a modern, eye-catching look. While The Imperia Orchid Staggered Oak, priced £8.99 per square metre, is a different take on the parquet look with its quirky layout.'

Budget small bathroom idea 9: Spruce up your shower enclosure

If you don't want to splash out on tiles for your shower enclosure, laminate wall panels make a stylish alternative and are a cost-effective option for a small bathroom. What's more, no installation is needed – simply fix securely onto a tile-free and grout-free surface. It's completely waterproof, so you don't have to worry about unsightly grout or mould appearing either.

'To provide the illusion of space in smaller bathrooms, consider lighter coloured panels or marble patterns which will ensure a light and airy feel – regardless of the space and natural light available,' suggests Helen Dennett, UK Marketing Communications Manager at Mermaid Panels. 'On average, you can save up to 25 per cent on shower panels vs tiles. As well as being more cost effective, bathroom panels are also quicker to install.'

Budget small bathroom idea 10: Give your fixtures a fitting makeover

Rather than swapping out your old bathroom for new, changing the fixtures can easily make a difference. Whether it's new taps, a shower head or shower screen, these can all make stunning features. From traditional to modern, there are so many styles to choose from to suit your interior scheme.

Budget small bathroom idea 11: Illuminate with sleek lighting

Brighten your small bathroom with stylish and practical lighting. The right lighting can open up a space, and make it feel cosy and stylish. 'The key to creating the illusion of more space in your bathroom is to make sure the lighting is bold and bright,' adds Emmie. 'Introducing symmetrical wall lights on either side of your washbasin will limit shadows, whilst a bold yet beautiful pendant light above your basin can really make a difference to the look of the room.'
